Back to School and New Unit

Sorry for the lack of posts! School started a few weeks ago and I am absolutely in love with my class! I have 13 girls and 3 boys. Yes, 13 girls! Last year was the complete opposite, I had a class full of boys. I am looking forward to all the girlie things I can do with my class this year. Although, I won't forget about my 3 boys!

The other (FABULOUS) 2nd grade teacher I work with saw this cute idea for a door on pinterest (of course!). We stayed late one night to turn her vision into reality. Here is our final product. I think it is my favorite door creation we have ever made!

(Sorry, the pictures are not that great. They are from my phone.)

The first two weeks of school went by so fast! We enjoyed the fun activities in Abby's Super in Second packet. We also completed a Kevin Henkes author study. His books are perfect for character development during the first weeks of school.

Along with our Kevin Henkes study, we worked on the Miss Daisy is Crazy unit I created to go along with the book by Dan Gutman. The book was assigned to our students for summer reading. The packet includes reading, writing, and math activities. You can check it out on my tpt store here.

I hope everyone out there is having a wonderful start to the school year!

Word Study and Freebies

My teaching partner and I developed our word study program based off of Beth Newingham’s word study. You can find the details of her program on her Scholastic page.

 Word Study Program

On Monday, students are given a pretest using the spelling pattern we will be introducing that week. Students who are able to spell at least thirteen out of fifteen words correctly on the pretest receive an alternate list. We want students to be challenged instead of studying words they already know. The second list is a usually a challenge list. There are some patterns, like contractions for example, where the second list isn’t necessarily “challenging." However, it does give the students an opportunity to learn new words instead of studying words they already know.

We also choose five new pattern words to give on Friday during the assessment. These words are not formally given on the word list, but they are used throughout the week in word sorts, word work, and other centers. I feel that by including these new pattern words, it really shows if the student understands the spelling pattern and how to apply it.

Here is a freebie for you to start the year! This packet includes the word lists for Unit 1 of 2nd Grade Reading Street 2008. Each spelling pattern has 2 word lists of 15 words and 5 new pattern words. You can still use these lists even if you do not use Reading Street. Most curriculums for 2nd grade use these spelling patterns. Here are the spelling patterns it includes:

- Short Vowels
- Long Vowels
-Consonant Blends
-Inflected Endings
-Consonant Digraphs

The packet also includes the lists in a “planner format.” I have my students glue this list in their planner instead of writing the words. This way they always have a list with the words spelled correctly.
Click on the image below to download this packet from my TPT store for FREE.

Here is the assessment form I use for word study. I do not use the sentence dictation on the back until later on in the year. Click on the image below to download this form from my TPT store for FREE.

Each week students are assigned 3 word study activities to complete for homework. They can choose any 3 activities from the list they keep in their word study spiral. I have tried different ways of assigning word study homework, and I feel that this creates the most interest and motivation for my students in completing their homework. I compiled the list of activities from different ideas I have seen. Click on the image below to download this list from my TPT store for FREE.

You can also purchase a packet of word sorts that go along with this word study unit from my TPT store.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, I checked and double checked all of these documents, but after looking so many times everything starts looking the same. If you see any errors please let me know and I will fix them as soon as I can.

Thank you!

Freebie- High Frequency Words

I created this high frequency word freebie that goes with the second grade Reading Street curriculum. This one is for the story, Iris and Walter from unit 1.  The students will fill in sentences using one of the high frequency words, then write their own sentence for each word.

Click the image below for freebie.

I would like to see if this type of worksheet is in need for teachers using Reading Street. Please leave me feedback and let me know if you would like more of these for the other stories.
Thank you :)

Work in Progress

I have been working away in my classroom little by little throughout the summer. I have a very small room, so I try to get the most from my space. Here are some "work in progress" pictures I took today. I took these pictures on my phone, so they are not the best quality. I will post better quality pictures when my room is complete.

This is the view from the doorway.

The first section of the bulletin board is my calendar area. Then I have pocket charts for vocabulary. The bins and storage underneath are for my math and literacy centers.

Here, I have my "Wow Words" board where we will post interesting words to use in our writing.

I spent a lot of time this summer sorting and organizing my books.

I am still hunting for matching baskets for this bookcase.
I purchased the ones on there now last year from the
dollar spot at Target.

This is our gathering area and my CAFE Menu.
I made the crate seats last year and my kids loved them!

Here is a look at the mess I still need to organize.

I have one more week before we officially go back for preplanning. I hope to work on some centers at home. I promised Lloyd I would stay away from my classroom during my last week of summer.

We will see how that goes...
